Top 10 detox tips

During assessment with your clinical nurse specialist preparation for your 1-1 detox will be discussed. Here you can find out the areas we will focus on.

Stocking up

On arrival, your nurse will help you to stock up on foods, drinks, music etc, they will also be on hand to save you the stress of shopping throughout your detox.

Low stress environment

One way to reduce stress and anxiety is to be somewhere which feels safe and familiar (like home). Warm baths and relaxation tapes help to unwind; cancelling arrangements during the detox phase is advised.

Food

You may not feel like eating in the initial days of detox, however 1-1 detox places an important emphasis on nutrition. Soups and juices will be prepared for you in the initial days then as soon as possible regular nutritious meals encouraged. It is common for drug or alcohol users to neglect there diet, you may be given vitamin supplements.

Fluids

You may sweat with withdrawals so you need to replace fluids, your fluid intake will be monitored and encouraged by your clinical nurse specialist, your bed linen will be freshened as required and any assistance required with bathing given.

Fluid replacement

As there will be excess sweating and possibly vomiting, it is important that adequate fluids are taken.  At 1-1 detox we encourage clients to consume our freshly prepared fruit smoothie drinks.  These drinks are natural and made daily by the clinical nurse specialist and are packed with vital nutrients.  Clients are also encouraged to consume adequate amounts of water whilst detoxing at home.

Remember why

If at times you find the detox difficult it can help to remember why you are doing this. Being clear about why you are doing the detox. Writing down why you have decided to stop and looking at these at times of discomfort can help.

Coping with cravings

Cravings no matter how strong will always pass by themselves if you wait long enough. During detox your clinical nurse specialist will help you learn too deal with cravings.

Ask for support

A detox is more likely to succeed if you are able to ask for and get the support you need. During your detox your clinical nurse specialist is always on hand to advise and support you through, they will also be active in helping you set up continuing support systems after detox.

Take a day at a time

Each day without drink or drugs is a success. Decisions about the rest of your life do not need to be made at this stage. Focusing on achievable goals will protect you from feeling overwhelmed. Your 1-1 nurse will help you remain focused and motivated throughout detox.

Reward yourself

You will need to find other ways of rewarding yourself than drink or drugs.

Stopping is only the start

A detox is an important step in stopping drinking or drug use, the risk of relapse remains. Your 1-1 detox nurse will help you devise a comprehensive aftercare package before they depart, and in times of need you can always contact one of the team for support.
